Thunder Bay Blues Festival will be taking place at Marina Park this year from July 7-9. You also don’t want to miss the fifth annual Valley Fresh Bucker’s Festival taking place on July 29-30 from 10am-5pm in the Bay and Algoma Neighbourhood. With over 40 performers and 10 stages there will be something for everyone.
We can’t forget about Canada Day, especially with Canada’s 150 being this year. Every year, Thunder Bay holds a HUGE Canada Day Celebration at Marina Park with the biggest fireworks display in the area. From 5pm-11pm, hop on the free Thunder Bay Transit shuttles from Intercity Shopping Centre and the 55+ Centre to Marina Park (shuttles will be circulating to get you to Marina Park and back).
Ready for more music? Thunder Bay’s Country Fest is taking place Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12. If you’re a country music fan you don’t want to miss this! The two days are packed with entertainment including, Bret Kissel, Tim Hicks, Jess Moskaluke, Bobby Wills, Cold creek County, Doc Walker, Washboard Union, James Barker Band, Chris Krienke & Strawdawg, Scott Skirving, Scott Van Teeflen and Just Us.
What better way to end a Friday and start the weekend with a movie under the stars! Head down to the waterfront on Friday or Saturday August 18, 19, 25, 26 & September 1 between 8 & 9 for Movie Nights on the Waterfront. The best part – it’s completely free. Just bring warm clothes, a blanket, maybe a lawn chair. They even screen locally-made short films before each show, so get there early.
If you’re looking for something a little different why not check out the Kite Festival at Chippewa Park on June 4 from 12pm to 4pm. Held since 1981, this festival has been named to the ‘Top 100 Ontario Festivals’ list SIX TIMES! The festival offers kite workshops and you will get to see fantastic demonstrations and flying skills of kite experts from renowned Kite Clubs.
Everyday you have the opportunity to explore over 100 parks and 32 km of paved recreational trails. If you’re into camping, you need to check out Trowbridge Falls and Chippewa Park. Chippewa Park, located just 15 minutes from the city on the shores of Lake Superior, is also home to amusement rides and an old-time carousel that has been a favourite in Thunder Bay since 1921. Speaking of the Sleeping Giant, You HAVE to make your way to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park! Whether you want to bike, hike, canoe, kayak or even camp this summer, this is the place to be. It’s had the highest cliffs in Ontario and provides some of the most picturesque views in Northern Ontario.
You can finding hiking trails at Cascades, hike to a waterfall at Cedar Falls, and explore the best birding spot in Northwestern Ontario at Hurkett Cove. Of course, we can’t forget about the beaches. Remember in Southern Ontario how far you had to drive for a beach day? Well not in Thunder Bay! You don’t want to miss out on a day by the lake! Boulevard Lake and Chippewa Park both have sandy beaches for you to hang out at and relax this summer. At Boulevard Lake you can find Lakeview Beach, Sandy Cove, and Sunny Side Beach.
