Chinese New Year will be held on February 16th, 2018 and will mark the start of the new year according to the Chinese calendar, with each year being represented with an animal. 2018 is the year of the Dog which signifies communication and responsibility within the workplace – great skills for students to have and continually improve on this year!
Chinese New Year can be celebrated in a number of different ways. Families and friends spend quality time with a special home cooked dinner. Red envelopes are given to children and teenagers often filled with money to represent luck and positivity. Recently an app was created so that teenagers can receive money from loved ones on their mobile phones!
There are a number of ways that students can celebrate Chinese New Year in the North. Confederation College in Thunder Bay hosted a Chinese New Year event for students with dinner, prizes, a talent show and live entertainment. On February 15th 2018, students at Canadore College will have a celebration in their cafeteria with lots of food, music and games! If you’re a student at Cambrian College, you can check out Dine on Campus to order their Party in a Box gift packages which include Chinese New Year themed cupcakes to give to a friend or faculty members!
Check out the Student Association for information on events at each of the six Northern Ontario colleges, or you and your friends can get together to have your own celebration for Chinese New Year!
Tweet us at Study North if you know of any other ways you can celebrate Chinese New Year on campus. Happy Chinese New Year!
