Attending Sault College in the fall? Why not take a campus tour this summer and get to know this multi-cultural, international, vibrant city. International? Yep, Sault Ste. Marie Canada and Sault Ste Marie Michigan in the United States are sister cities located a short distance apart via the international bridge crossing the St. Mary’s river.
Here’s just a couple of exciting events happening in the Sault this summer:
Poutine Fest – June 28th – July 1st
Show your true Canadian pride and dig into a variety of options for Canada’s ultimate, soul soothing, snack foods. POUTINE FEST!! For real? A festival for poutine? Yes indeed. Enjoy deep-fried goodness smothered in gravy topped with cheese curds and just about every other goodness you can imagine. Held at the Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site, this festival will have your mouth watering and your taste buds jumping.
Canada Day Celebrations – July 1
Full of poutine? Perfect. Time to celebrate this great country of ours in style with plenty of activities, entertainment and live performances going on at the Roberta Bondar Park. Opening ceremonies will begin at 1:00 P.M. Canada celebrations in the Sault are always a treat, so much to do, so much to see and outstanding fire works to cap it all off. What a great way to wind down the long weekend. O’ Canada!
Italian Festival – July 14
Sample the absolute best of Italy in Sault Ste. Marie. The Marconi Club proudly welcomes everyone to share in their pride of Italy. Music and dancing and food and drink. A lively, tasty and very satisfying day indeed. Join in the toe tapping, hand clapping fun and savour the flavours. If you’re especially nice, they might even let you play a little bocce.
Rotaryfest Street Party and Ribfest – July 18 – 20
Three jam packed days of music, food and activities, what else could you ask for! Got a hankering for ribs and a career in culinary arts? Well you’re in luck because Ribfest will also be running throughout the weekend. What a great spot to check out after visiting Sault College and learning about their culinary programs.
Oh, did we mention its right on the waterfront too?
Art At The Docks – July 21
Wanna channel your inner Picasso? Looking for some inspiration for your next masterpiece? Then go check out “Art At The Docks”, one of Algoma’s largest multimedia art shows.
Held on July 21st from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM at the Hilton Beach Front and Community Centre on historic St Joe’s Island only 45 minutes from the Sault.
Car Show – July 27
Are you into cars? Thinking about attending Sault College for one of their automotive programs? Then come on up to the Sault for a campus tour and stop in at Hilton Beach on St. Joe’s Island for the for an exciting weekend car show! Visit the campus on the Friday and attend the car show on Saturday July 27th.
Downtown Street Party (again) – August 8
Whaaaaat? These Sault people sure do like to party. More fun in the evening sun starting at 6 pm this party has great food, great live music, Fringe festival performers and lots more.
Crank the Shield – August 16
Looking for an amazing summer adventure? Are you a mountain biking maniac? If so, you don’t want to miss out on this three day biking extravaganza. It starts with a train ride into the remote outback of the region followed by three days of some of the most challenging terrain and heart stopingly beautiful vistas. This event is a race so sign up early. This is not for the faint of heart and there are entry fees so check out the details carefully.
Blueberry Fest – August 17
Pancakes made with fresh local blueberries, local maple syrup, fresh sausage and pioneer games. Come to the Ermatiner-Clergue nartional Historic site, known locally as ‘The Old Stone House’ and enjoy something unique, and, tasty.
Additional Things to do:
Take a stroll along the hub trail as you wind your way along the waterfront. Don’t miss the historic Sault locks and Whitefish Island and rapids. Like to fish? Then bring your gear and do your best to hook a salmon, a trout or whitefish.
When in the Sault take in the Bushplane Museum with outstanding exhibits and lots of interactive, hands on things to keep everyone in the family occupied.
Don’t forget your swim suit and take a drive about 40 minutes north of the Sault and take a refreshing dip in the largest fresh water lake on the planet, Lake Superior. It’s like a visit to the coast, with rugged natural beauty and sweeping sand beaches.
Bring your passport and take the afternoon to travel across the international bridge to Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. Visit the international locks where ships from around the globe come and go every day. Some of the largest ships on the planet make their way through here.
