Our website and social media pages are filled with tons of reasons why you should study at one of the six leading Ontario colleges in Northern Ontario. But do you ever want to hear directly from some real students with real study north experiences? Are you wondering what it’s REALLY like to study north? Do you want to know why you should study at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Sault College in Salt Ste. Marie, Northern College in Timmins or Haileybury, Cambrian College in Sudbury, Collège Boréal in Sudbury or Canadore College in North Bay?
Well look no further! We asked some real students to tell us about their “Study North Experience” and here is a few of the great things they had to say:
Sarah tells us that she appreciates the size of the campus. “There’s tons of activities to get involved in on campus to the amazing resources for students but the campus is still small enough to get from class to class in a matter of minutes. The small size gives a warm and welcoming community feeling that I hadn’t experienced when I visited other schools.” – Sarah is currently enrolled in the Environmental Technician program at Confederation College.
“The teaching staff is what I love most about Sault College. They are willing to help their students in whatever way that they can and they really do get to know your name and who you are.” – Lidya is currently Practical Nursing student attending Sault College.

Brodi tells us she absolutely loves living in Northern Ontario. “I moved to Haileybury from the GTA and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I love living in a town that is surrounded by lakes and tons of walking trails. There is a close knit community feel and everyone I have met has been really kind. The Study North Initiative really helped me gain the information and support I needed to make this move and study north!” – Brodi is completing Animal Grooming at Northern College, Haileybury Campus
Kendra tells us she thinks its great that the college allows her to not only study in French but live in a Francophone community. Kendra says, “I like where the campus is located and how it isn’t right downtown but easily accessible by public transit. It’s surrounded by trees and a beautiful lake. This makes the hands on learning in my program possible because we can take our classroom just outside of the school.” – Kendra is studying Environment, Forestry, Fishery and Wildlife at Collège Boréal.
Lucas tells us how much he loves the city of Sudbury and Cambrian’s campus. “I love meeting new people and the small campus and small class sizes makes that incredibly easy here at Cambrian. You get to know your teachers and classmates which, in my opinion, makes every student learn better and come out with a stronger understand and knowledge of the subject matter. – Lucas is currently enrolled in the Heavy Equipment Technician program at Cambrian College.
Stephen’s teachers and the city of North Bay are his favourite parts of studying north. “Immediately after starting my program I could immediately feel like my teachers genuinely care and want me to succeed. North Bay is the perfect mix of a city with a small town feel. If you have the opportunity to experience Northern Ontario living, you should because it’s not just a great place to study but it’s a great place to live. – Stephen is studying Aircraft Maintenance at Canadore College.
